HI/ RICK I have checked again the settings and have moved them to 25 & 110 ALSO UN CHECKED THE BOXES, BUT IM NOT SURE IF THAT IS CORRECT PCEDURE its vista 32 im using and when I purchased this new p.c last november i was told the port settings were different for vista. ? ? NO im not on a wirelless system just have the one p.c ,
I have now discovered that after I upgrade A V G FROM 7.5 TO THE LATEST VERSION 8.5 It has caused problems in the e. mail scanner programme , so I have unchecked the outgoing box , but unfortunately that has not resolved my problems, in fact windows mail does not now send any e/mails out. with or without attachments.
I see the port numbers are 25 and 110, unless there was a change somewhere. If the settings are correct, then it might be an AVG issue or if you're using some type of firewall, Wireless router Firewall. I have the firewall in my wireless router turned off but you a Firewall on all my computers.
If you're at a WiFi Hotspot/hotel, they will block these ports.

I seem to have 2 seperate problems now MOZILLA FIREFOX seem to be all jammed up when you click the desktop icon it just will not open , ive deleated the programme and re loaded firefox but no joy even when i try to close down the system up cames the last page stating you must close down firefopx, firefox is not even on my desktop to open, althought he icon is there,. Im inclined to think there must be some type of virus in my system but i have ran 2 different scans , AVG and windows defender which is on the windows vista system ,
Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, update it and do a quick scan. If it finds anything, remove it and then post back what it found. After we try cleaning out any malware, if there is any, I have a way to get Mozilla Firefox back, but you may lose your bookmarks, but they may be already gone. You cannot delete a program, you have to go to start, control panel, programs and features and uninstall it from there.
Depending on what malware is in your computer, you might have to go to DELL Malware Removal Forum, read the top post by bugbatter and follow the instructions.

my e/mail tiscali.co.uk the email only had one jpg phot in it which I have sent before many times no problems,

How long is the name of the file?
Without posting your email address, what is the last part of your email address, like aol.com, comcast.net, hotmail.com, etc...?

I would check the settings, first.
