Windows Update web site

I have a Dell Demension 8100 w/ Windows XP SP2 and IE7. Surfing on the internet is not a problem until I try to go to windows update. The system just hangs at the website and the little globe just spins and spins and spins around forever going no where. Even when I go into Control panel and click on the windopws update Icon it also just hangs. I was able to go to windows update with no problem before. It seems it is just isolated to update. I can go to microsoft.com w/ no problem.
I give up!
 Anyone with software knowledge??

Thanks, Choppy

Have you scanned for viruses and spyware lately?  It's not that uncommon for update sites to be disabled by such programs

Yes I have scanned for viruses and spyware and my machine is clean.
It just seems to be the windows update web site that I can't get into.
