Windows Vista Internet Problem

I bought a new Dell XPS 410 with Windows Vista about a week ago and I cannot get the internet to work with it. I am running DSL through a Westell Versalink 327 modem/router. My old laptop has windows XP on it and I have no problem getting internet connections. However, on the Vista machine, it shows that I have an internet connection and that information is being sent and recieved but it wont load any webpages and it wont run programs such as AIM. I have file sharing software and it will download from that but at a very slow rate. I've read several forums on the internet about Vista not working with DSL but so far I havent been able to find any answers. Anyone have any ideas?

I've been having the same problems!! Its stupid. I'll connect for a few minutes through a direct connection of my broadband. I'm definately not able to go wirelessy right now. N E ways its the security with the new vista. You have to shut windows firewall off completely. I have mcaffe so i still have a firewall. I called dell today and thats all they could tell me to do. Its working so far, but i've had spurts of connections this long. Also, i know this is a nightmare to have anyways but dont dl Limewire it will cause connectivity problems. I'm not sure why but everytime i try to run it i lose connections like crazy and then i spend 3 hours tryin to reconnect to the internet. I think its that i've only had the computer 2 wks, and i've had to restore my system twice!

I have turned all of my firewalls off. Right now, the security on my computer is virtually zero and it still will not stay connected. Today, my connection was good for the first five minutes and then it went dead. I've read on some other forums that the Vista program isnt compatible with certain types of modems or routers. One forum said that modems that use Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) wont work with Windows Vista. I dont understand how XP can work fine with the same modem and Vista cant.

Girltoxy - You should only have 1 firewall on your system whether it is XP or Vista.

VT1rocks - Since you have a Westell 327 please make sure you have the most up-to-date firmware. Also, you ask why XP can work fine with the modem and Vista can't is that Vista is a new OS and it is has been built differently than previous Windows OSs. There are many devices that will not work with Vista. Realize that Vista is designed to utilize the new technology that has been created in the last several years such as using 64-bit devices, before we could use on 32-bit. Now that devices are faster and can do more because of the 64-bit architecture some of the older devices may not work. You should look to the manufacturer or provider of the Westell 327 modem for a firmware update that will allow this to work on Vista. I've not heard one way or the other but that may be the issue. It's at least a place to start.

Will using dail-up with vista be a huge problem, NO. Vista supports dial-up connections. If you purchase your system with a modem it should have not problem with dial-up. The above discussion about the Westel327 modem and the need for a possible firmware update to work with Vista. This device is not an internal modem for dial-up, but a highspeed DSL modem used for broadband connection. Some devices that have been out on the market for a while will need an update in order to work with Vista.

I, too, have a C521 running on Vista.  I am able to dial-up using the AOL link to sign-on.  However, when the computer attempts to connect to the internet using the connection feature, it is never successful, usually stating that the user/password is in error.  Yet I enter the exact same user and password when prompted as I do for the AOL method.

No idea where to go from here.  Thanks.

I don't know if anyone is still on this but ...

Just got new XPS420 running Vista home premium around the end of Feb. Went online with included modem & existing Worldnet acc't. Everything was fine, decided to go ahead with DSL service. Opted for AT&T 1.5MB service over other options. Performance has been very satisfactory. I downloaded cummulative Windows updates ( since the end of '06, really Dell ! ) to the tune of ~ 108.5MB, & it completed in about 9 1/2 minutes, so I think speed is quite respectable.

I haven't had any problems of getting disconnected ONCE I FINALLY GET THE LINK TO STAY ON! Either Vista or the TrendMicro PC-cillin, or both, spend a good bit of time interfering after wake-up, reboot, or boot. Eventually it's OK. I'm still sorting thru my settings to verify how they're set, & that they stay that way. I plan to call AT&T just to hear what they have to say.

Equipment is : Broadxent Briteport DSL modem from Creative to Ether conn on Mother Bd

it'sthe trend...other threads in the XPS board. Turn off the pc-cillian firewall..then unload the trend stuff and get some of the free antivirus and firewall stuff...they work as well and in more cases better then the big box stuff...and the price is right..

I run with AVG antivirus and Comodo firewall..
