Windows XP Pro Machine Drops LAN/Internet Connection

I recently re-built my Dimenstion with XP Pro and all appeared fine until it started to drop its LAN/Internet connection at random times and the only way to fix it is by re-booting.   When it drops the connection, the only thing it can ping is its loopback address.

The NIC card has been replaced and the port on my router switched, yet it continues to happen.   I have spent hours trying to work out what could be causing this, but to no avail.

Someone on another board suggested I try re-installing TCP/IP from the following Microsoft KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357   but this didnt work, it still drops the connection.

Can anyone suggest any possible reasons for this to happen??

TIA, Mike

Does it only happen to one computer on the network or to other computers on the network as well?  Have you checked the power management settings of the network card to see if they are set to always provide maximum power?  Does the same thing happen if you temporarily connect the computer directly to the broadband modem instead of the router?

Try booting to Safe Mode with Network support and run it for a while in that mode (yeah, I know it won't be very pleasant).  This will help to determine if it is a problem because of something running in the background in Normal mode.

I'll give it a try and report back. The only problem is though its random, so I may have to use it in Safe Mode for quite some time to do proper testing.

Yeh, its only on the one PC, no others are affected. Not tried moving the PC into the same room as the modem to directly connect it, as it involves a lot of messing about and think it would still happen.

Have checked all the power settings for the OS and NIC card and replaced it with another too just incase the original was faulty. Stumped as to what can be causing it and dont want or think I should have to format the system again :(
