Windows XP WPA patch problem

I am trying to get WPA encryption working for my Linksys wireless g card/router. I am having trouble installing the Q815485 patch for adding WPA capability to Windows XP Home Ed. I have tried isntalling both the independent patch download, as well as the Windows Update patch (both are the same, I assume). The patch appears to install normally, but in Add/Remove Programs, there is no listing for the installed patch. In the properties for the access point, which is seen just fine, there is no option under "Data encryption" to select WPA (just WEP).

The router and card work fine with no encryption. Also, using the same drivers, I am able to get the WPA encryption to work in Linux. Has anyone else seen this problem, and is there a fix for it?

Thanks,
Dan

Do you have the latest firmware for the router installed?

the router's options would be independant of any windows patches.

If you mean the wireless card's options, you probably need a new driver.

What OS and laptop model, and what card are you using?

Yes, I meant options for the card, not the router. I have the latest drivers installed for the card, but I installed them before I installed the XP patch. Perhaps uninstalling and reinstalling the card drivers will work. I am having the difficulty on Windows XP Home; the router is a Linksys WRT54G and the card is a WPC54G. My machine is the Inspiron 5100. As stated above, WPA works fine in Linux (dual boot) using wrapper software around the normal Windows WPC54G drivers. I will report back and let you know how it goes.

Thanks,
Dan

check to see if you have KB826942 in the add/remove program. if you have that, you don't need Q815485.

have you set the wpa password in you router first?

Ah, silly me, I was looking at the wrong drop down menu to select WPA in the card settings.

However, I still cannot connect. My AP is seen, but the popup dialog on the bottom right corner of the screen just keeps popping up saying that a connection is available but does not connect. In my card settings on the computer, I have WPA-PSK, AES, and a 32 bit hex password. (The hex password was randomly generated for the linux connection, and is set in the router configuration).

I tried doing a hard reset of the router, as suggested in another post about WPA, but this did not solve my new problem. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dan
