Winsock or Not?

In one of the listings a problem with connection to the internet is addressed.  That problem is that the computer identifies that there is an internet connection (both hard line and wireless), but internet explorer nevertheless says that the "Page can not be displayed"  A possible problem is referred to as a winsock problem and there is a link to a program to correct the problem.  I downloaded that program, ran it, and the problem persists.

The problems with internet explorer followed some updates that I clicked on from Norton Utilities.

Any ideas???

Thanks!

After you ran the winsock fix, did you power down your cable modem, router and lappy, then startup again? I helped a family member with the winsock problem, but it wouldn't display the internet until we powered everything down, then up again.

I did not think of turning off the router.  I rebooted the computer a few times.  I will try that and get back to you.  Thanks for your help.

Is it possible to uninstall the norton utilities update? Or use system restore to go back to before the updates were applied.

Hi,

What version of Windows are you running? I'm sure there is a winsock fix for XP and a different one for other than XP. Check to make sure you're using the correct one. Also, try running the winsock fix in safe mode. You can winsock for XP here: http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

Can you get an IP address from your router?

I tried uninstalling Norton, and it said that I was not allowed to uninstall Norton.  I also tried resetting the computer to an earlier date, but that did not work either.  Any other bones that can be thrown?

Pam, I am running Windows XP - I'm not sure if I dowloaded an XP or other version of the Winsock fix.  I'll try again with your suggestion and I will do it in safe mode.  I don't exactly understand the router question...the computer is registering a connection with the router if that is what you are asking...Thanks for your help.
