Which version of the BIOS are you running? I know that various BIOS upgrades on the XPS-R series fixed USB problems. The latest version of the BIOS is A13, but it has caused other problems on some systems. Version A12 is problem free, but can't be downloaded from the Dell download site. It can, however, be obtained from Bob Matthews' web site at www.duhvoodooman.com
I just updated to A13. Got it from the Dell support site. Prior to that I think I had whatever the system was shipped with (maybe A08 or A09). I had the shutdown problem with that BIOS version initially and updated to A13 hoping it would fix it. It didn't.
So you think A12 might help? If so, I'm willing to give it a try.
If A13 didn't fix it, there is no sense in going back to A12 (the problems people had with A13 were not related to USB). I always had trouble with USB devices on my XPS-R system, especially with USB network adapters. I finally gave up and went to PCI network adapters and currently have no USB devices attached to my XPS-R. The USB devices are probably sharing an IRQ with some other device. Check Device Manager and see if this is the case. If it is, report back on which device it is sharing an IRQ with, and I may be able to make some suggestions.
An IRQ conflict doesn't seem to be the cause in my case. USB is using IRQ9 and there are no other devices with IRQ9.
I wanted to also mention that the wireless adapter is the only USB device on this PC. Actually the mouse is a USB mouse but it's not using a USB port. I'm using an adapter on it so it plugs into the standard round mouse port.
I'm still open to other suggestions if you or anyone else has any. If I find the solution I'll post a message in this thread.
