Wireless balloon icon is missing from task tray

This actually happened to me a couple of months ago and I was able to resolve the issue but I forgot what I did to fix the problem.

My Wi-Fi light doesn't even come on now. Which of course I'm sure is a result from the balloon icon missing. Previously the balloon icon would start with the computer start up and would tell me if I had an excellent wireless signal or no signal. Now, I do not have that icon. Anyone have any ideas on how to get it back??

I tried going to the Programs menu and clicking on my Intel ProSet Wireless and it doesn't do anything. It's almost like it has been deleted somehow. Thanks.

Since you don't tell us which model computer you have, it is difficult to be specific.  Did you try reinstalling the drivers for your wireless network adapter?

open network connections in control panel and see if wireless network connection says disabled, if yes, right-click and Enable. try repairing the connection. check device manager (start -> run -> devmgmt.msc) and tell me is the wireless icon under network adapters has a bang (!), ? or X on it. which wireless card do you have?

is the card able to detect any wireless networks in range? if you open the windows wireless manager or the card utility does say 'no wireless network found in range'?

Yes, it says 'no wireless networks found in range'

if the Wi-Fi light above the keypad is not coming on then maybe the wireless radio is disabled? are you still able to connect without the wi-fi light?

if the issue only concerns the wireless icon then try this for Intel Proset.
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs is Control Panel
  • Scroll down to Intel Proset Software, highlight it and click Change/Remove
  • On the screen that comes up select Modify and click Next. Ensure that all the options on this screen are selected and then click Modify. Sometimes Proset only installs the wireless drivers but not all the components
  • Also go to Network connections in Control Panel, right-click Wireless Network Connection, click Properties and select the option 'Show icon in notification area when connected'

I'm sorry, I was not aware I needed to put the computer model.

It's a Dell Inspiron 6000 with an Intel ProSet/Wireless 2915 AB card or something like that. I'm not exactly sure on the model number of the wireless card.

I have not tried re-installing the drivers, how would I do that?

Thanks.

The only way I can connect to the internet is to physically plug in my ethernet line or a phone line.

I've tried using Function + F2 to turn the enabler on but I'm still not getting anything.

I actually won't be near my laptop for about another hour, I'm at work on the work computer.

But yesterday when I pulled up the Network Connections from the Control Panel and tried repairing the connection it didn't work.

I can't remember how I got there but I somehow got to the properties of my wireless card and it said 'this device is working properly'.

I have the Intel/Pro Wireless 2915ABG card.

I also have another question. What would be the purpose in re-installing the drivers? what would that do? would I have to install all of the drivers or just one for the wireless. Thanks.
