It sounds like the 1100's overheating, possibly because of a defective wireless card. Or possibly the defect is that the card's drawing an excessive amount of current, causing the power supply to shut down.

You could try downloading i8kfangui and using it to monitor the 1100's temperature and control its fan settings. According to the Web site for i8kfangui, it fully supports the Inspiron 1100.

(edit) Kitz E Kat, you're quicker than I am - sorry about the cut! But we both seem to agree that power is a potential problem.

Got me on that one !!!
Only thing i can think off is a power setting that shuts it down to save power ...
I can't see any such setting in my old Latitude running XP with a Orinoco card , however there could be some power managment in the D-Link card or one in the BIOS of your laptop...

Just a thought ...

Thanks for your help.
If the card is broken or draws too much energy then its only when there is no net. If the card is plugged in and there is net then everything is ok. I dont think the card without net should be hotter then with net. The fan doesnt speed up too. The system just goes off and there is no beeping which ususally would indicate an overheated Computer.
Its really weird. I will just download the temperature monitor and let you know what happened. So far I thought the 1100 has no temp sensor.
I will also try to crash my old HP with this card just to be sure its not my dell where the problem lies.
Thanks.

Heat isnt the problem. The max temp I reached was 53 Celsius.
I was also not able to crash the HP with the card. So I think its the combination of this card and my Inspiron.
Last thing to test would be if another card shows the same symptoms in the 1100.
If you have another idea please let me know.
Thanks.

That's a reasonable next step. Please post back with the results.

Oky I figured it out.
I just changed all the settings for the card and it crashed even more frequently with some settings. Especially enabling the powersafemode of the card made it worse.
But I guess I could solve the problem.
I switched all settings back to normal and the system crashed as usual only when there was no net.
Then I disabled the modem which is build in into my Inspiron and now everything works well.
Its not really convinient to go to the hardwaremanager everytime I want to switch from wire to wireless.
Is there a way to do it automaticly that only the modem or only the wireless card are enabled but never both of em?
Thanks
