Check if the issue persists in Safemode with networking. Restart the computer and tap F8 at Dell logo. Select Safemode with networking. Refer the following link for more troubleshooting:
The laptop has Windows Vista yet I cannot run the command to get the information you need. Instead I get the following message;
C:\Windows\system 32>systeminfo 1>:\systinfo.txt
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
C:\Windows\system32>c:\systinfo.txt
I'm not very technical but computer literate. I had Norton 360 for 1 year but that expired a couple of years ago now. I'm not sure about Firewall, I think it's Windows?
Start, control panel, device manager. Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.
Click on advanced. Look for Antenna Diversity. Change Antenna Diversity from Auto to Aux.
Go to the power options, and changed the Wireless Adapter Setting, from Maximum Power Setting to Maximum Performance.
I followed the instructions on the post, that is it. I haven't personally done anything to the laptop. I used the wireless at my friend's but their wireless Company changed something in order for me to access the wireless internet. Since then I have not been able to access wireless anywhere else.
Here is the ipconfig;
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001] Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
Start, control panel, device manager, network adapter, right click on Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card, left click uninstall. Tell it to remove the drivers and software.
Restart the computer.
When you log back in, the new hardware wizard will try to install the adapter but fail. Install the drivers you saved to your desktop. You will also need to apply the tweaks mentioned above.
I am using my work laptop to access the internet. So how should I download the drivers onto the laptop without internet? Can I download them onto a pen drive and copy from there?
Download the drivers on the work computer. Then put the drivers on the flash drive, then put the flash drive on the other computer and follow the instructions.

I would suggest you to uninstall the existing drivers and install:
Do follow the steps below to check which network card you have in the machine:
With the correct version of operating system and the Device Id for the network card I can find the driver for the network card.
Awaiting your response!

I followed your instructions and unstalled the Dell Network Adaptor. Now I have the following;

Please advise how to proceed.

Lianne,
Sorry for the delay, had to work this weekend. :emotion-9:
Questions are...
Did you recently install/reinstall the operating system?
Can you run an ipconfig /all log and post it back here?
Dell Inspiron 1545
What operating system? 32-bit or 64-bit?
