Wireless Connection at Bootup

Everytime I boot up My Dell Dimension 8300, I do not have a wireless connection. The Wireless Zero Configuration is stopped. When I start the WZC then I can connect. I know this has to be a setting on this computer because my other computers connect just fine. I have  Linksys Router and a Linksys adapter. This problem just started a few days ago and other than normal updates I haven't made any changes that I am aware of. Where do I start to solve this problem?

open up your services window and check the setting of the WZC service. you can go to start>run, in the box type services.msc

Scroll down to the Wireless zero setting and see if it is set to automatic. If not double click on the listing and it will present a window to change the settings...

Davet50, WZC is set to automatic right now. I just set it after I rebooted because I had no connection. However the next time I reboot it will be stopped and I will have to set WZC again to automatic again to have this computer connect.

I am wondering if you perhaps have another wireless manager running at  start up that is disabling the wzc.  Did you have another program that managed the connection

I do have Linksys Easy Advisor on this computer. This program is not on the other computers.

try going in msc.config and unchecking it and see if that will fix the issue. It really sounds to me like something else such as another manager is running and taking controll of the wireless configuration.

Davet50,

This might sound strange but I also have Linksys EasyLink Advisor installed Version 3.11

I can connect using Linksys EasyLink or by using the wireless manager, if that helps. I found this information on WZC. How to start Wireless Zero Configuration using Windows Vista

This laptop doesn't have any other network connection software.

Just to clarify--I am running a wireless linksys router and linksys adapter. This is on an XP Home System. I can stay connected when this computer is on--it is only when I reboot or boot up that I have no connection. This just started and I am trying to figure out what changed or even if I may have changed something. It looks like windows has taken over the control of my adapter. How can I give the control back to Linksys or should I just remove the Linksys software.

Rick, I read the directions that you gave for VISTA and I do not seem to have "WLAN Auto Config" listed in services.

Davet50 and Rick, I check what I have running in msconfig. The Linksys Easy Link Advisor is unchecked. The Wireless Network Monitor is checked. Do you think I should uncheck the Wireless Network Monitor? Rick I have Linksys EasyLink Adviosr Version 3.11 build 9082.90.  This particular machine with the problem is running XP Home.

The problem is not starting the wzc it is keeping it running all the time. If another adapter sofware has control of the adapter then it will disable the wzc in favor of its own. This to me seems to be what might be causing it to stop, even when it is set to start automatically. If may be that a previoius install of adapter sofware is still some how taking control of the adapter at start up and shuttting down the wzc

If you do not have an icon in the lower right on the task bar. look in all programs and for the linksys software for the adapter. Start that and make it the default adapter or some such it has been a while since I ran the linksys software but there should be a setting that will force either the linksys software or the wzc to manage the adapter.

You might have to end up reinstalling the linksys software for the adapter. First make sure you have the latest version.

Hi Rick,  I understand. Thanks for what you did to help. I know this is something simple that I am missing. Take care.  Annie

Davet50, I do have a Network Adapter Icon near the clock. When I rt. click on it there is a listing of " USE WINDOWS XP WIRELESS CONFIGURATION". When I click on "Use Windows XP Wireless Configuration" a new window opens up that says: "Your adapter is currently using the Linksys Network Monitor. Do you want to switch to the Windows XP Wireless Zero Configuration Utility? I cancelled out and left the adapter set the way it is. Not sure what else I need to check.

that is exactly it. If you want to let the WZC manage the adapter you need to say yes and then the linksys software will deload and the adapter will be managed by the WZC

I have always found the linksys adapter management program to be flakey and had always just used the windows wireless to run the adapter. While they make good routers and such the card management portion is a bit suspect.

All I can suggest at this time is if you want to go back to the linksys program I would uninstall it and then reload it.

Davet50, I set the WZC to manage the adapter and then rebooted. The adapter came up with a red x, and then connected after about 20 seconds. Interesting that this works in this manner and that the Linksys stopped working as it should. I still think I have a setting somewhere that is off but for now this seems like it will work. I will have to reboot several more time to be sure. Thanks for all your suggestions. Annie
