Wireless connection

Hello,
I recently purchased a 6000d with an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 (802.11b/g) card.  I did some reading of the manual and see that I can connect at select public areas.  Is there anything else needed other than the wireless card to connect where hotspots are identified?  Obviously I'm new to this wireless bit.

Usually an account there.

Thanks John,

I didn't think it was as simple as just arriving at an "internet-cafe" and being able to connect.  So, from the start I would need provider details for each anticipated location where I intend to connect.

it depends on where you go ;)

lets say you go to the local starbucks/borders....here the WiFi is free and usually an "unsecured" or open connection..meaning people like you can sit and drink coffee and surf.....all you have to do is to right click on the wireless icon and View available wireless networks, choose the one and connect. you are all set to go.

However, certain other places have "hotspots"...here the connection is secured or closed...you would need an account with the provider of that particular hotspot to get access to the network. An example would be TMobile hotspots at Kinkos....here you can follow the same procedure but will be asked to log in using a username and password. The basic Tmobile Hotspot runs 9.99 for a daily pass to 19.99 for unlimited monthly to more.........

Hope this helped.

Yes, that explains it.  Thanks again.

Some places are free - some McDonalds, Pinera Breads, small local coffee houses, just to name a couple.  Our Yellow Pages lists wireless hotspots.
