It is impossible to help you without more information.  Which model computer do you have?  Which version of Windows are you running?  Which make and model wireless network adapter do you have?  Can you be more specific about what Netgear said - i.e. specifically what problem is that your computer or its configuration has"?

To help troubleshoot this problem, on the computer with the problem, and when your are within range of the router, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

Hi Steve. I have a Dell Inspiron 6000. I use Windows XP and my modem is a westell model 6100 from Verizon DSL. my router is netgear wgr614. After speaking with Netgear and working with them for about 1 1/2 hours and not getting my wireless to work they said it was a problem with my computer. They said that dell would have to reconfigure it to accept the Netgear router. About a year with a different Westall modem and Netgear router I did have wireless and something happened and I stopped being able to connect. Netgear blame my Verizon and Verizon said it was netgear so I replaced both and I am not able to connect. Dell said that Netgear should be able to configure so the computer would accept. Thank you in advance. Marlene

I'm not sure what this means.  Since you are trying to make a wireless connection and I have asked for information about a wireless connection, the router does not need to be connected to a computer, just to the modem.

I am not sure how to connect the router to the modem since there is only one place to connect the router to the modem and the only way I can use the computer is to have that connection in the modem connected to the computer.

I have one computer. In order for me to communicate with you on this computer I must be connected to the modem. My modem has only one port. The router has 5. I do not know how to connect the router to the modem and still have internet access to you without being connected to the modem. I do not know how to open notepad, I have never used it.

There is one port on the router that will be labled WAN or Internet.   In odrer for the router to work, that port must be connected to the modem by an ethernet cable.   You can then either (1) plug another ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN ports on the router (assuming that the router has already been set up to make the connection to the modem), or (2) temporarily unplug this connection (modem to router) and then connect the computer to the modem to log onto the internet.  When running the test (ipconfig command) you just want to be attempt to the connect to the router while it is connected to the modem.

Have you even tried to connect to the internet through the router while the router is plugged into the modem and the computer is plugged into one of the LAN ports on the router?  It seems to me that you would have had to do this to set up the router (and enable its wireless capabilities) and that Netgear Support would have had you do this to make sure the internet connection works through the router before coming to conclusions about the wireless.

Notepad is standard Windows program.  You can find it by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad.

There are no labels on any port on the router. There are 4 ports together and one alone. I just tried the second paragraph that you mentioned and I cannot get to the internet. I also did what you said to do about copying the information and pasting to Notepad. When I open Notepad i cannot find a command that allows me to past the message.

I still don't understand what you are saying.   For the wireless connection to work, the modem needs to be connected to the router.  No computer needs to be connected at all.  How many computers do you have?  How many LAN ports does the router have?

To copy the output from the command prompt window, right click in the bar at the top of the window and select Edit > Select All.   The right click again, and select Edit > Copy.  Now open Notepad and click Edit > Paste.

It looks like you are successfully connecting to the router, at least through the wired ethernet connection.

The problem with your wireless is that you have set a static IP address and that IP address is not even in the range of IP addresses valid for your router.  To fix this, Your open Network Connections, right click your wireless connection and select Properties. Find the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), select it, then click on the properties button. Put a check mark next to "Obtain an IP address automatically", and, if necessary, put a check mark next to "Obtain DNS server address automatically".

Steve, Thank you sooooooo much. You have done what hours on the phone with Netgear could not do. The last 2 people I spoke with yesterday at Netgear were a bit arrogant and very difficult to understand. I do not know how they expect a person with limited knowledge to connect with the instructions they give on the CD that comes with the router. Are the other router companies as difficult to install?
