Wireless connects but I cannot get online

I am using in Inspiron 6000 with XP. I had intermittant luck with connecting wirelessly at home although I have a desktop that connects wirelessly with no problem. I tired to fix it with the Linksys website. Now my home network has disappeared. I have a Linksys network in its place. That's not the problem..I can get that fixed easily. Now the computer allows me to "connect" using the Linksys network, but even after it says I am connected, I cannot get online. The black command box flashes really quickly on the screen a few times. It appears to be blank but I can see that it is labeled "system" something and it looks like it also says "IPCONFIG." Or it says that it is acquiring the network address, but never is able to. I have tried having it find the IP address automatically and I have told it the address, etc. I think a Windows file is corrupted. I have checked my settings and they are all correct. I ran the Comcast analysis and the system profile says the gateway and DNS server are not available and it can't find the IP address.
I'm not a beginner but I'm not too well practiced at this stuff, so be kind in the lingo department. Thanks for anything you can tell me.

"Can I download it to another computer or a memory stick and somehow install it on the laptop?"  Yes, of course.

I cannot get online to download the file directly to my laptop. Can I download it to another computer or a memory stick and somehow install it on the laptop?

The program does not give an option for where it saves itself. It just installs itself on the hard drive and runs. I tried to move it to my stick from the hard drive but only part of it moved. Any other ideas? Any idea what file might be corrupted? Maybe I can copy a good copy from one of my other computers.

You should just be able to copy it from the memory stick to any location on your hard drive.  Then double click the file to run it.  It should not be that difficult.

I cannot get the program to load onto the stick. It never gives me the option of where to save it.

Download it to the desktop on whatever computer you are using to connect to the internet.  Once it is on the desktop of that computer, use Windows Explorer or My Computer to copy it to the memory stick.  Don't try to download it directly to the memory stick.
