Wireless doesn't get internet automatically

I am using Windows to manage wi-fi. Whenever my computer connects to an access point, whether it is encrypted or open, it usually doesn't get internet the first time it connects. It will say it is connected, but the internet doesn't work until I go and disconnect the connection, then press connect again. Sometimes I have to do this several times. I know when it finally connects correctly at home because my router shows a separate connections for the internet connection and the home network, and only the network will show as connected. It also keeps trying to connected to encrypted access points that it doesn't even have the key to. Even if I set the wireless networks to manual, it still tries to connect automatically. I've tried reinstalling the wireless software and updating the drivers but the same thing still happens. I'm thinking it's a Windows XP issue. My laptop is a Dell Latitude D820 with Intel PRO Wireless 3945ABG. If you want to know anything else just ask, any help would be much appreciated. Any suggestions?
