Wireless help desperately needed with Latitude

Hi. I sure hope you can help cause this is driving us up a wall. I have provided a service tag below. A friend has an old Latitude C600 running Windows XP Pro that was formatted and we are trying to get it to pick up a wireless router. It has the following in it...

1. mini card... 3com 3C556 (CN-06f553-48361)

2. 3Com Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller 3C920 (3C905C-TX)

Service Tag:

Windows automatically found and installed drivers for both devices after the format. We even tried drivers from Dell. We can get a hard wired connection, but nothing wireless. We get TWO Local area connections showing up in the systray... Local Area Connection 3 and 4. The card is detected in the bios. A 3Com diagnostics program (3Com NIC Doctor) from the Dell site says the NIC is ok, but the "Run Network Test" fails... that is obvious if we can't get a wireless connection. So why then doesn't it pick up any router? If the drivers for it are installed and it's recognized in hardware shouldn't it automatically pick up a router? This has to be something really simple that we are not thinking about. As I said I sure hop you can help. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

BlackHawk99,

The wireless adapter I see if the Realtek RTL8185 54M Wireless LAN Network Adapter, which is the usb adapter you are using. It has a dialup modem.

Is everything working? I made a system restore point and have also used Slim Drivers sometimes it helps and sometimes you have a more current version that it wants to install. If you have a newer adapter, in you allow it to install what it thinks is the latest drivers, you could lose some of the newer technology, like My WiFi, available on Windows 7 systems.

Yes, there is no adapter.

In case I wasn't clear I would like to add that... "Wireless Network Connection" is not showing in "Network Connections"

BlackHawk99,

Did you install the drivers in the correct order? How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

I did not see any drivers for XP, just older versions of Windows.

Rick,

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it! I'm not sure what else to say. This one really has us stumped. When XP Pro was reinstalled there were no drivers to load. All items in Hardware, Device manger, were present... no yellow ? marks or anything. XP seems to have found everything on it's own. All hardware seems to be accounted for. You are right... when the service tag is entered no drivers are specifically for XP for this laptop. Anything else? Surely someone out there has had to face this same situation at some point. Help! LOL

BlackHawk99,

Usually when installing the operating system on any Dell computer, the desktop/notebook system utility(if applicable) and the chipset drivers need installed first. The combination of the two determine what is attached to the computer so you can install the rest of the drivers.

I see a Dell Suspend Utilities, not sure what that is. It is under system utilitles, so it may need installed first. Then try the drivers for your network adapter.

Try running an ipconfig /all log and post the information back here.

BlackHawk99,

Check for the wireless card itself. See if it states which one is installed. INSTRUCTIONS HERE.

Hmm maybe this laptop doesn't actually have built in wireless? I am so frustrated with it... the owner swears he had wireless with it built in. Maybe he is mistaken? I really don't know. I used a Unknown Device driver utility and I don't see anything come up as not loaded. All seems to be here.

hmmm the TPLink shows up as the Realtek. Am I correct in saying that?

BlackHawk99,

Guessing that it is a 3Com 3C905B Integrated Network Card I don't know if THESE DRIVERS will work or not.

You might get lucky finding the drivers at one of these from the GOOGLE SEARCH.

Thanks Rick! Yes this is the integrated 3Com card. The drivers for it are loaded and it works. That is the hardwired net connection right? So from what you and I can see... this laptop does NOT have a wireless card as the owner thought it did? Am I correct n saying that?

BlackHawk99,

Download and install EVEREST Home Edition

Cliick on Everest Home Edition, click on computer, click on summary. Anything in blue, left click on, then you can click on driver download. You can find drivers that way. Look under network and it will tell you which network adapters are found.
