I have exactly the same problem, Inspiron 6400, linksys wrt54g router with the very latest firmware. I have attempted the fix I have found on dell's website but it doesn't match up with the latest linksys firmware. Can anyone recommend a router that works? My other laptops connect fine to the router so .... not really sure what the problem is. The Inspiron can see the router but doesn't get onto the internal lan or internet. Can anyone help?
Actually everything may be working properly, the hitch is you may need to reset the MODEM into a bridge mode. (If you were connecting with the modem directly connected to the computer, this is probably the reason.)
Usually this is done with the modem directly connected to the desktop and telnet into it to make the changes (can't use a web browser here). Also your router may need to log onto your DSL connection, and the DSL name & password is probably different than your std logon name and password. (Usually are.)
Contact your ISP to find out how to do this (usually involves several steps and only they can give you you actual DSL name and password.
It's actually a cable modem connection rather than dsl. I have one other laptop and a tower that connect wirelessly to the router and they connect to the internet and internal lan perfectly fine. It's just my new Inspiron thats having the problem. I think I will probably get the d-link router DELL says is compatible with this laptop. Not sure if your comment helps the OP maybe I do have a different problem to them.
DON'T SPEND ANYMORE MONEY!! I just bought a E1505/6400 Inspiron and it has the same trouble you are discribing. I have other PC's connected to my wireless router with NO TROUBLE, infact the only where ever I take the new Laptop it doesn't connect. It is not a router problem. It is something wrong with the WIRELESS CARD in your Inspiron. I changed out 1 Broadcom 1390 wireless card, with no change, so now I have the Intel card you could get for an upgrade on the way. It should arrive this week. I will try to highlight this message and let you know how it works, BUT PLEASE DON'T SPEND ANY MONEY ON A NEW ROUTER.
I'm hoping to se an answer on this too (even if it means getting another mini-card). Just got insprion 1705 last week, and it 'blew up' my wireless connection both on the network in my apartment and at my house. (by blow up, I mean: I can have up to four other computers on the wireless network, working fine, and when I fire up the new Inspiron, all others lose connection)
I'm no expert, but enough to be dangerous - my first guess is DHCP problems, but having the d-link 614+ revB assign IPs didn't work. One interesting note, I reset the router and tried all of them with no security (usually use WPA-PSK) and it seemed to work for 10 minutes, then "poof" they were all gone)
please help, it seems a few of us are having this issue
Well I bought the dlink - DI524 router, £40, and my inspiron 6400 now works wirelessy, I had to download the latest drivers for my netgear usb wireless stick to work and the belkin pci card in my wifes tower system to get them to work with this router.
I have given up trying to get my linksys laptop wireless card to work, it is 5 years or so old so maybe it's just not compatible anymore.
