It's always a good idea to first connect to a wireless router by a wired ethernet connection so you can configure the wireless network.  I don't understand what you mean when you say you cannot take the cover off your new Dell.  Are you afraid it will void the warranty (it won't) or you just don't know how to open the case?  My experience is that PCI network cards (wired or wireless) always have less problems than USB network cards (wired or wireless).

Can you connect and get an IP address through a wired connection on this same computer?  When you switch the device connecting to the cable modem, do you always do a complete reset of the network (turn everything off, wait a few minutes, turn on the cable modem, wait another 5 minuters, then turn on the router (if present) and then the computers)?

The problem I have with taking the cover the off the computer is the actual screws holding it on. LOL  I've tried all the tools I have and can't get them off.   I went through and set everything up with a wired connection to the router, then shut everything down, waited and then turned ont he modem, then the router, then the computer.   I get the signal for the wireless network, but it cannot pick up the IP address.  I don't have any problem getting on-line if I am connected to the modem and/or router.  I have even manually inpt the IP address, and it still won't connect wirelessly.
