Wireless Issues

Hi,

I have an Inspiron 1705 laptop and have purchased Netgear's wireless router.  I have verizon DSL at home hooked up to my desktop computer already.  I could not connect the router to the DSL box as there was no slot on the dsl box to accomodate the router.

I initially connected the router into the desktop, then connected the dsl into the router, but if I turn off the desktop, I lose connection.

can someone please tell me what it is that I need to do.

thanks

It sounds as though your DSL modem only has a USB connection port, right?  If so, then ditch it and get one with both ethernet and USB and then you can connect the router DIRECTLY to the modem via ethernet, as it should be.

Thanks for responding.  The dsl does have 1 ethernet slot and 1 usb slot.  the problem is that I connected that ethenet slot directly to my desktop.  Now, how do I get the router to be connected to the dsl without using a usb connection.

Connect the desktop to the modem through the router. Your connection would go from the modem to the internet jack on the router. The Desktop would be connected to one of the wired jacks on the router

Hi,
First of all, lets go step by step..
When you do get a router into picture, you would not be using the usb cable that you r currently using to conenct the desktop..
Disconenct the usb cable and keep it aside..Connect the ethernet cable from the modem to the seperate port(internet port)behind your netgear router..take another ethernet cable and conenct it between any one of the 4 lan ports behind your router and your desktop computer(hope your desktop has a network card)..open internet explorer on your desktop..you would get the netgear smart wizard..run the same and setup your router..(now the  wrls on the router would be turned on)try searching for wrls networks from your laptop..you should be able to see ur netgear's network..

Thank you very much.  I will try this wen I get home.  My daughter also has a laptop.  she is in college, but hasn't gone back yet.  what do I need to do in order for her laptop to work wireless?  do I have to setup netgear on hers as well.
