Wireless Network Connection Continues To Acquire Network Address

I recently did a clean install on my 8500 and got everything up and going, including my internet connection. My 8500 is wireless and the status icon shows my network is continously "Acquiring Network Address". Is there anything I can do to help it connect? The internet works fine and this is what has me confused.

Regards

texastacoma,

You need to explain in more detail how your 8500 is connected to the Internet. Do you have a wireless router? If so, which router model do you have? Which wireless adapter is installed in your 8500? What operating system and service pack is installed on the system? Is the 8500 also connected via Ethernet to the router?

When you reinstalled the operating system, did you reinstall the chipset drivers for it? Assuming it's Windows XP, you might want to look over Dell's XP Reinstall Guide for the Inspiron 8500.

Please appreciate that there's a contradiction in what you posted. If the machine had no connection except wireless, and the wireless connection were malfunctioning, then there would be no possibility of a connection to the Internet.

Jim:

Sorry I didn't offer enough information regarding my system. I am connected to the internet via a Linksys 802.11b wireless router. My 8500 uses a Dell Truemobile 1300 WLAN Mini PCI card and I am connected via wireless. I am using XP Home with service pack 2 installed. When I did the clean install I installed all drivers including the chipset.

I am able to connect to the internet, but the "Wireless Network Connection" icon on the toolbar shows it is "Acquiring Network Address" on the "status" line. This is what has me confused. Why is the toolbar icon saying it is trying to acquire a network address when I am able to surf just fine.

Perhaps I should not worry about it since it seems to be working fine?

Thanks for the response and I hope I've been more clear.

Regards

texastacoma,

There have many improvements to wireless support in Service Pack 2. Try letting XP manage the wireless connection exclusively, as described in this Microsoft article.

And have a bit of patience! We're all volunteers here! :smileyhappy:

Thanks for the info. Excuse my impatience as I soon plan to leave town on a business trip and wanted to fix this issue before I left.

Sorry
