You do not mention your OS but if you have XP you can use the restore feature. Also if your son was on a network at college you will need to reconfigure your settings.
My OS is XP. Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is involved in the "reconfiguration?" Is that running the connectivity wizard again? If so, I tried that without success a number of times. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PROMPT REPLY TO HELP.
The easiest method with XP is to go to system restore and check a date when he had network ability. Be sure to record any programs or settings after that date.
