Wireless network detection issue on the xps 1730

Hi

I have a XPS 1730 with Vista and SP1. The network card is :Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG. I am using McAfee firewall and windows firewall is disabled. Wi-Fi Catcher is activated.

In the Connect To window, it only shows the secure networks. Is there a filter or any option to display the unprotected networks ?

Well, I have actually tested with someone else (who was using a dell inspiron). He could see 3 secure and 2 non secure networks, but all I could see were the 3 secure networks

on my notebook, not a dell, but i also have the 3945 abg intel card..... when i go to the connect window, it also shows encripted networks,,,bbut i believe that is what is in my neighborhood...i have seen three networks on my connect window, but all three are encripted.....so you may have encirpted networks you are pulling in. i don,t believe there is a setting to just pull in encripted networks as far as i can tell.

hmm,,,, you might go into the routers setup page, and see what you can find there...there might be a setting there that is causing you to only recieve encripted sites.... i am going to check mine tonight, i am curious to see if there is anything there...if i find something, i will give you a shout...

also, you might check to see what wireless mode your 3945 is using-

Wireless Mode Select which band to use for connection to a wireless network:

l 802.11a only: Connect the wireless adapter to 802.11a networks only

l 802.11b only: Connect the wireless adapter to 802.11b networks only

l 802.11g only: Connect the wireless adapter to 802.11g networks only.

l 802.11a and 802.11g only : Connect the wireless adapter to 802.11a and

802.11g networks only.

l 802.11b and 802.11g only : Connect the wireless adapter to 802.11b and

802.11g networks only

l 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g: (Default) - Connect to either 802.11a,

802.11b or 802.11g wireless networks.

NOTE: These wireless modes (Modulation type) determine the discovered access points

displayed in the Wireless Networks list.

OK Saves settings and returns to the previous page.

Cancel Closes and cancels any changes.

Thanks for the answers.

Actually I am trying to connect to a public wireless network so I have no access to the router settings.

As for the network card mode, yes, I am using the 802.11a/b/g value

Found the fix :

I downloaded and installed the drivers from intel instead of dell and it worked
