this sounds to me like a windows problem...hmm. i've had this problem many times... but the gray area i'm getting from you is how these are connected? From what i read, their both on wireless cards to a wireless router that is hooked up to a lan dsl? .. and they can both access the dsl, but not each other? . if this is the case.. then the first and most obvious is to check the work group name for both computers.. XP - Home (and Doman/Workgroup) right click my computer and goto properties ..goto the computer name tab and confirm that both computers are named and the workgroup is identical!! , i usually start with the default MSHOME and when i have confirmed handshake, i change it to my preference.. this is for XP , but its very similar for 98/ME
Make sure you have the Windows XP built-in firewall disabled on the wireless connection. If you are running a third party firewall, make sure it is configured to allow local network traffic.
They are both linked with an ad hoc wireless connection. No router or WAP. Just directly to each other. My DSL connection is running into my desktop and my laptop accesses the internet through my desktop (Internet Connection Sharing is enabled). The workgroup is the same for both (Home) and they are both named. My laptop has no problems with the internet connection and it is also set up to access some programs off of my desktop and that works fine as well so I know that they are connected and are communicating fine. It is just when I got to access the other computers shared files under the "My Network Places" icon, the other one isn't visible, even when I click on the "Show Workgroup Computers" in the left taskbar in Windows Explorer. I'm sorry if I've thoroughly confused you all. Maybe everything would be easier if I did have a router, and that is in the works soon, but I only have two computers networked and the ad hoc connection has been working fine until now. Also, I did just install Norton Internet Security on my desktop, but I did configure the firewall to allow my laptops IP address, so that shouldn't be the issue, but maybe it is?.... Thanks guys
I dunno, but it does. Anyways, it all doesn't matter now. I ended up downloading the latest drivers and software updates for both WLAN cards and also installed Service Pack 2 and everything seems to be alright for now. My notebook was just able to "see" my desktop under "My Network Places".
