I have this problem with Vista Home Premium on a Dell XPS 420.  I can only gain local access whether it is directly connected to the modem or via wireless.  I know it is not a hardward problem because in the past I had to completely re-build my system back to factory spec.  Over time, some configuration must be changing because it will stop accessing the internet via wi-fi or direct.  I am searching for a fix...
