But what wireless router are you using?  From the numbers you quoted it looks like a 802.11b router.

thanks for the reply. sorry should have said :smileysad: it is a linksys wrt54g i have been on live chat with linksys they have confirmed the speed that the router is transmitting is is 54mbs i have looked through the settings on the wifi card but none of them seem to make any diffrence

What about your router settings?  I presume you didn't set it to operate at 802.11b speeds only and that both router and notebook were operating in the same room when you took your measurements?

yep both router and laptop are in the same room and both are set to "G" the laptop shows it being at 54mb but it is not as it downloads at 6mb (give or take)

Usually, there isn't a need to set the adapter to G-only, just the router will do.  Are both adapter driver and software up to date?
