Your computer has almost nothing to do with it. You need to log into your wireless router (assume you have one) and change the security to either WEP or WPA (better). You will then assign either 1 or 4 "keys" (with WEP), depending on the strength of encryption you choose. You should go to some sites to learn how to do this, like www.dslreports.com.

Hope this helps.

Well the control utility is the "easier" way to do it. I can change anything in the router settings once I have the password...but I didnt set any!

The router is where you set things up.  The documentation that comes with the router tells you the default username and password, which you should then immediately change.

In addition to encryption as stated, you should also turn off the broadcasting of your SSID, and restrict the MAC card to just your PC.   All of this is in the ROUTER setup.

every router has a default name and password.  dlink's is  u/n: admin  p/w: (leave it blank).  it'd be nice if you'd post the info for the dell models once you figure it out as I'm sure others will ask the same question you are.

as for security, if you have WPA it really needs to be the only thing you enable.  when picking a passphrase, it's recommended that it be at least 20 characters long and not something that's easily guessable or made of words -- use capital and lowercase letters and numbers.

as there are a bunch of other broadcasting networks in range, I wouldn't disable SSID cause it doesn't really increase your security.

I keep referring folks to this article.  It's plain and simple.
