Wireless networking problems...
I recently purchased a Netgear WirelessG network card for my Dimension 4550 and am having some trouble installing it. I got the software installed ok but when I install the card the machine just keeps rebooting itself over and over until I unplug it and take the card out.
Thinking that the card might be the problem I bought a Linksys USB WirelessG adapter. When I try to install the sofware from the disk it gets to 25% and the freezes. I even downloaded the driver from the Linksys website and it still stops at 25%.
I am clueless.
A little backstory in case this matters: 2 years ago my pc came with 128Mb of RAM, Windows XP Home, and a CD-R drive. I installed a 256Mb stick of RAM a long time ago and it has been working fine. However,I recently reformatted the machine and installed Windows XP Pro and a DVD-RW in the second bay.
I have asked this same question in the BIOS forum and the response was that a BIOS update may or may not help so now I'm curious as to what the Networking folks think since this is ultimately a networking problem. Any suggestions?
Thanks

After reinstalling Windows, did you install the chipset drivers for the motherboard? Have you tried clearing NVRAM?

Before going into detail about installing chipset drivers, you should check to see if they are already installed. Go into Device Manger by going to Start > Control Panel > Perfrormance & Maintenance > System, then click on the Hardware tab and then click on the Device Manager button. Are there any devices listed there as problem devices? If there are, report back on which ones.

could you go into detail on installing the chipset drivers and clearing the NVRAM? or direct me to a website that will explain it? I didn't personally format/reinstall/upgrade Windows, I had a friend take care of since I really don't know much about this kind of stuff. thanks,
