Wireless Networking with Vostro 1700, Intel Proset/Wireless - can access Internet wirelessly but cannot file share
Well, I'm a patient man, but after 24 hours of hitting brick walls I'm ready for some help - PLEASE!!:emotion-9:
I'm using a Netgear DG834GSP v3 wireless router which is connected to my desktop by ethernet cable and I just have the one laptop I want to network (file & printer share) with it.
As I said, I have had the internet connected, but no way can I set up the Home Network. I've Googled myself into a stupor, I've read Dell, Netgear and Intel web pages and I've tried what I could understand :emotion-7: - and there's a LOT I don't understand!
I thought I had it when I found the topic in my "Dell Support Center" which I discovered on the HDD - but, no - I did the whole darned procedure blow-by-blow and all that happened was I lost the Internet as well!:emotion-12: I've still not got that back yet!
Somebody must have had this and fixed it..................... PLEASE could you do the humane thing and either wise me up - or SHOOT me!

What OS are you using?
This has the sound of firewall issue. What firewalls are you running on both systems.

Thanks for your response, Dave. Sorry I didn't get back - I had gone to bed with my brains scrambled! (I'm in the UK - a few hours ahead of you I guess.)
Anyway, I'm running both on XP SP3 (one Home and one Pro, but that makes little difference, I guess, except the wizards etc. are sometimes better on Pro I think?)
I have Panda Titanium on both but I have checked that I have the firewalls turned off - the MS oneas well.
I believe there is an issue with the Intel Proset/Wireless. I know I had an error kick up when I was installing; "Network Wizard might not work: see Article 871122 in MicroSoft Knowledge Base". I eventually found that and followed all the things it said but to no avail......
I'm sure I'm doing something stupid but I just can't find what it is!
I'd really appreciate anything anybody can suggest...........

Hi Dave - thanks for coming back!
I realise there's loads of information I didn't give you, but my head was so buzzed I'd forgotten how to think!
Yes, I could connect to the Internet with the laptop. I tried switching to WWZ but I lost the internet connection to the laptop when I did that! Neither computer could see the other at any time or under any configuration.
After a night's sleep I attacked it again this morning, and I thought about your query about firewalls...... I turned off completely both the Windows firewall and the whole Panda Titanium application to be sure that nothing was in the way. I then re-installed the network and........................I'M THROUGH!! :emotion-21::emotion-2:
I am so grateful to you, Dave. Only, I was sure I had put the right permissions in the firewalls, but obviously not!
Now I've got to try to work out how the heck I DO configure the firewalls...... I think it might be easiest to disable the firewalls in the Panda applications and switch on the Windows ones which, as far as I can see seem to automatically set themselves to allow the network. What do you think??
Kindest regards
Chris

I only run the windows firewall actually because of being behind a router. all you really need is a outgoing protection if you are behind the Router's NAT.
Some will argue that you really do not even need a firewall but what the heck windows and the NAT to me makes good sense and when i run stealth testers they all report back that my firewall are doing the job and I am in Stealth mode as far as the WWW.

Can you get to the internet with the laptop?
Have you tried switching to the windows wireless zero to manage the adapter on the laptop.
Can either computer see the other one.

Oh, right? I haven't a clue, really, except that I know my Panda occasionally tells me how clever and watchful it's been and shows me what it's caught!
I'm afraid I'm the dummy they write the "how-to" books for......... only I'm dyslexic!! Well, I am when it comes to computer-speak, anyway.
I just looked at the Panda FAQs and they say it will automatically configure itself to its environment - so it seems if I'd have turned the darned thing off in the beginning, set up the network and then turned it back on again , I'd have been OK!
I spent all day yesterday talking to tech advisors from Netgear, Dell, the computer retailer, yada, yada, yada - and you'd have thought just ONE of them would have thought of turning off all the firewalls.......?
Flush with the high of succes now I'm going to see if I can work out how to remote my desktop from my laptop - or maybe I should leave well alone having got this far!?

Oh, well - THAT didn't work!! Panda blocked access, despite what it says!!
I'll see if the MS one works, otherwise you'd say not to bother, would you?

Depends on how you feel. Like I said earlier the only drawback with the window firewall is no outbound checking. But to me since I am the only one who uses my system I know where I go so I am not all that concerned with it.
