Assuming the SSID isn't hidden on the wireless network you're looking for, you can try pressing Fn-F2 on the laptop.  This key sequence is normally a default "soft" switch to turn the wireless radio on and off.  If the SSID of the wireless network is hidden, then you won't see it in Windows.

When you say "no wireless" are you saying the the wireless adapter is giving an error of some kind or that it's not showing any available wireless networks?

The SSID is the "name" of the wireless system.  It depends on how the wireless system is set up whether it broadcasts this "name" or not.
