If that doesn't fix it and you are still under Warranty, call Dell Tech Support for a replacement. They are the only ones who can authorize replacement or repair.
I did as you suggested - uninstalled in safe mode, deleted existing software, went to Dell and got latest driver, installed it but situation unchanged. I have the latest diver but wireless still is not working. No problem connecting with ethernet.
Thanks Steve. So it looks like it must be a hardware problem. No more warranty - expired a week ago!!!! Wouldn't you know it. I'll need to gather up my courage to open up the back.
Well, guess what? It wasn't a hardware problem after all. Who knows what it was, not me! I tried another system restore (all last attempts at SR had failed) to a couple of days before the problem and lo and behold the SR worked and the problem resolved. I have NO IDEA what the problem was but asm glad to be back on line with my favorite laptop.

Did you try uninstallilng the wireless adapter in Safe Mode before trying to reinstall it with the latest drivers from the Dell download site?

Check to see if the MiniCard is securely seated in its slot by removing it and then reinstalling it. See the following:
