I have a Lynksys Wirelss N and I have a laptop Dell e1705 with a wireless N card.  I can connect to the internet only when the router is attached.  I have Mcafee virus protection that came with a firewall.  What do I need to do to get my wireless working?

1)You need to configure your router to recognize and allow access for the wireless card. 2)Configure the McAfee firewall to allow for network/internet access. You should have instructions for this on the CD for your wireless card and on your computer if the McAfee came pre-installed on your laptop.

Hi,

Which N-card are you using? If it is the Intel 4965 card, follow the steps to disable N-mode on the card as a workaround. Right Click on My computer from Start Menu/Desktop -- Properties --- Hardware Tab -- Device Manager Button - Expand Network Adapters -- Right Click on Intel 4965 Wireless Card -- Properties -- Click Advanced Tab -- Select 802.11n mode -- Click on the drop down button and select Disabled. Below is a screenshot for the same.

I forgot. I don't know what card I am using.  My laptop is new and Vista is new to me.  I tried to find that information last night, but I had no luck.

Thank you.   Right now, the wireless works while it is unsecured.  I just don't want to keep it unsecured.
