If you open Device Manager and expand the listing for Network Adapters, does your wireless network adapter show up there?
I don't understand your last question. Is there something different/special about an AOL modem that we should be aware of? If the modem can only connect by USB, then you will have to replace the modem, as routers that would connect by USB rather than ethernet are nearly impossible to find.

Hi Volcano
Thanks for your help, much appreciated. I really did get fustrated in the end, and ended up calling DELL who took me through the BIOS system on the laptop. I'm happy to say that things are just great. Dell were most courteous, polite, and friendly. I must say their service is good.
As for the router, I have an AOL broadband modem enabled through an NTL cabel line, hence the difficulty in connecting. I have since spoken with Netgear who have given me the assistance needed. Should you have a cabel = NTL, TELEWEST etc..., DSL connections, please do not buy the wrong router/modem and always ask if your ISP supports the router you have in mind.
