Wireless problem outside house

Hi

Hope someone can help with this one because Dell can't. My laptop has a wireless card. I have a Hawking Wireless 54g High Speed G Router HWR54g, this is connected to a D Link DSL 504 router.

My problem is that I can only get wireless connectivity whilst I am in my own home. As soon as I take the laptop out of the house, although the internet says its connected to any unsecured network, the web pages are "not available".

This defeats the object of having a wireless laptop. As I am a total novice could someone shed some light on this one as I am going away soon and want to take the laptop with me.

The wireless card has been replaced by Dell but that has made no difference.

Thanks for looking.

What kind of signal are you getting outside your house. Also there might be some interference or most likely your lacking signal strength.

Signal strength excellent when connect to unsecured network, but keep getting "page cannot be displayed".  Can connect to secured network using code but still get the same message.

take a look at this site:
depending on whether you're using intels software, dell's, or microsoft's to work with your wireless cards the gui will be different on how to check what's going on:

Are you using proset? Dell Wireless? or Windows standard networking?

As far as I know it is Dell wireless, whatever it originally came with.  Sorry but I am a complete novice.

Thanks
