wireless problem

When connecting to a wireless network, it says that I am connected. But when I try using the internet, the explorer says that I am not connected. What should I do?

To help troubleshoot this problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

What make and model wireless router are you trying to connect through?  Are you running any firewall software that may be misconfigured and blocking your access to the internet?  Have you ever been able to connect to the internet using this setup before?  Have you tried power cycling your router to see if that solves the problem?

A microsoft broadband networking wireless station. Model MN-500. I have norton antivirus(which came with the computer) and as far as I can tell there is no firewall enabled. With the Mac laptop I am renting from college I have no problems connecting and using the internet. I just got a dim 3000. My roommate has the router and I new to wireless so I don't know what power cycling is.

No, this is not the problem.  Normally Windows manages wireless connections better than the utility that comes with the netowork card.

When my roommate gets home I will have him try it. I found something in the Dell Wireless - Wireless Network Connection window that states

"Windows is currently managing this adapter.

To enable this application to manage this adapter, Windows Zero Configuration
must be disabled for this adapter.

Please refer to this application's help for detailed instructions on how an
administrator disables Windows Zero Configuration for this adapter."

Could this be the problem, if so how do I do this. I can't seem to find the application's help.

The power cycling did not work.

It was Norton Internet Security that was causing the problem. Thanks for your help.

It is either a firewall that is blocking your access or it is a misconfiguration in Internet Explorer.   Most newer Dell computers ship with either Norton Internet Security or McAfee Security Center, both of which have firewalls.  If you are uncertain about configuration of these programs if they are installed on your computer, temporarily uninstall them until you learn how they work.  If uninstalling these programs solves the problem, then you know where the problem was.   Another thing to check is to open Internet Explorer, click on Tools > Internet Options, then click on the "Connections" tab, then on the LAN settings button.  Make sure there are no check marks in any of the boxes on that page.
