Wireless problems / intermittent connection xps 420

New Dell xps 420 with Dell Wireless 1505 draft 802.11 wlan micro card only intermittently connects to netgear DG834PN router. Diagnostics state that cause  is poor signal even though router is sitting on top of computer and all signal bars are green. all other computers and my pda can pick up wireless and report excellent reception. Despite purchasing 3 year premium service dell technical service wish to charge me to resolve issue stating that it is a software issue. There is no other software installed other than preinstalled software.

When I attempt to connect to wireless network i receive message stating that i cannot. diagnostics state no response from router / poor signal even though signal quality appears excellent. After maybe 10 attempts Comnnection occurs and works fine until next attempt to connect. Any advice. how can dell deem it fit to charge me to support a wireless card that refuses to connect wirelessly

What wireless security are you using, WEP or WPA?

Try disabling the wireless security from your router settings then set the wireless authenication to open on your network card.

If this works it will be down to your wireless security

first of all is your warranty still active?? if not then you really need to have a 1 time support service for any concern that you will have since warranty is expired... re: w/wireless connection, possible troubleshooting for that is to take a look at your router settings and check the wireless security options and also try to play w/ the channels on  your router for wireless.... another way to isolate the wireless is to uninstall/reinstall the driver for that.

Thank you for your input. Status is the same whether secured or not (wep open). I have changed channels, upgraded router firmware to latest, upgraded driver for wireless card (newest driver not installed on brand new system). System works perfectly when used as wired system and also seems to connect well  if router is in same room within a few feet of wireless card. However when  I move router to its normal position (15 feet distant, thin plasterboard wall)  it will only connect after multiple attempts it it connects at all. despite 4 bars of signal strength.  Once connected the connection appears stable. xp pro system with ralink card and pda both have excellent signal in same area and connect immediately.

Xps 420 brand new (2 weeks old) still under warranty with ??premium?? support of 4 years purchased, hence my irritation with inability to resolve issue and suggestion by dell tech support that i should be further charged.

That sounds like an antenna problem. Make sure the antenna on the router are properly connected (some unscrew, so they might be loose), as well as the antenna for the XPS (if it is removable).

If it isn't the antenna, it could be something between the router and the computer causing interferrence.

Thank you,

The intermittent inability to reconnect has improved after resetting and reconfiguring router after firmware update. the 1550 wireless card however continually shows about half the signal strength of my other cards. However at least it is connecting now
