Wireless Router or Access Point ???

I am wanting to make my connection (DSL) to my laptop wireless.  Do I need a wireless router or a wireless access point?  I have read about a, b, and g formats and it all seems very confusing but I have gathered going the g format with the b also available to be most popular right now.  Also, is there anything extra special I need to look into when purchasing the adapter card?  I want this to be very basic but not compromise DSL speed.  It has taken forever to get DSL where we are and I don't want to "water" the connection back down to slow (dail up) type speeds.

I look forward to any recommendations,

Thanks,

Tiffany

Tbiznuz,

You want a router.  It will connect to your DSL modem and provide an interface for all your PCs to the internet.  802.11b and 802.11g are the two current popular wireless protocols.  802.11b (nominally 11Mbps) is slower than 802.11g (nominally 54Mbps) but unless you plan on moving lots of data between local PCs, speed is not an issue since either protocol is faster than DSL speed (no more than 3.0 Mbps).  You can save a little money going with 802.11b.

If you already have a wireless laptop, you won't need an adapter card.  One should be built in to the PC.  If not, get a router and adapter card from the same manufacturer.

Wireless routers from Linksys, D-Link, Belkin and Netgear are all good.  Lately D-Link wireless routers can be obtained for less than US$30 at places like Best Buy, Circuit City, OfficeMax.  Stay away from the TrueMobile product line.

Thank you. I purchased a Linksys router and card. With a only a few difficulties, I was able to install the hardware and am up and running. I must admit that I had to phone for help but the technical advisor was wonderful and the rest is history. Thanks again for the advice.
