If your Optus cable modem has an ethernet jack, disconnect the USB cable from between the desktop and modem and put it aside (you don't need it).
The Optus cable modem needs to be connected to the router with an ethernet cable
It's never a good idea to connect you computer directly to the modem. Even with a software firewall, it's nice having an extra protection from a router.
When you have plugged the modem into the router, unplug both. Then plug the router in, then the modem.
