if you can connect with cable, meaning you are able to browse the internet, then your TCP/IP stack is working correctly.

nettwerk
I installed Pre-N and it involved just connecting (in my case) the notebook computer with an Ethernet cable and running the CD with the configure software. It basically gave me an animated TV show for every step, showing me pictures, when and which cable to unplug and where to plug and so forth until finished and then restart everything.
If you are installing Pre-N router then I hope you have Pre-N either PC card or PCI adapter of the same manufacturer and that in the case of the hardware you run all the software first and wait for it to tell when to put the hardware in, especially PC card (also true of USB devices, generally).

If you have connectivity with the router by using an RJ-45 cable, then you may also want to consider updating the router's setup version. It could be old / out-of-date as was the problem when I bought my linksys.

Hope this helps
