wireless router

I went to Best Buy to check routers. I had looked on the net at tutorials, and understood from what I read that all I need was a wireless (or wired) router. The man in Best Buy said I need the wireless router and yet another large box. Price for each item was about $80. From the way I read the tutorial all I need was the the wireless router. What do I really need? I run a Dell 4600 with xp pro and and older Gateway. I am now totally confused....thank you

You don't say what you are trying to do with the router and the computers.  Are you trying to share an internet connection?  What kind of internet service do you have?  Are you just trying to share files and/or play games across a local network?  Without knowing what you want to accomplish, it is quite difficult to tell you what you need.  Please give us some specifics.

Sorry, I forgot to give all info. I am on dsl with ethernet. The phone company put some kind of black box on the desk that all plugs into. I want to be able to use the old Gateway in the basement on the internet with the Dell. The computer in the basement is about 14 feet away from this one. Both machines have usb ports and 56k modems, but I use dsl. Thank you

So long as your dsl modem can connect to a computer or router by ethernet, then all you need is a wireless router.  If your dsl modem can only connect by USB, then you would need to replace your dsl modem with one  that can connect by etherent.  It is next to impossible to find a router that can connect to a dsl modem by USB.  If the Gateway does not have an ethernet network card, then you would also need an ethernet network card for that.
