wireless router

I have a dial in computer in my home, and just got a wireless notebook with a wireless card already in it. . If i hook up a wireless router in the house can I pick up wireless signals through my home better then the few i get now?  . Could someone please explain how to do this to me. I am new to this. Thank you..

It is definitely better.

a) It is not illegal (assuming you do not have permission to acess other networks near your residence)

b) You have a more localized signal.

BUT standard wireless routers only support broadband connections.  I have only read about one router that supports dial-up.

Alternative:  You could share the dial-up connection from your existing computer to a wireless router using a network connection.  For an example, please refer to this illustration:  http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=640

Are you in a neighborhood where broadband (cable ISP or DSL) is available?

linda, are you asking if the router will help you better connect to signals from neighbors?

If I understand correctly, right now you do NOT have
* DSL
* wireless router
Instead, you use dial-up.
At the same time, your wireless picks up occasional but weak wireless signals from around the neighborhood.
You are intending to go contract for DSL and then connect your own wireless router (already purchased?) in order to take advantage of broadband speed(s).
Is it true that you do not yet have your own DSL (or cable) service at your residence (paying for it)
?
By the way, what (brand and) Model is your notebook PC?
Please report your
IPCONFIG /ALL >My.txt
( use Notepad to copy and paste the report )
