Wireless Security Requirements

I have recently installed a LinkSys WRT54G Wireless Router.  After setting up the security (WPA-Personal) my computer would not connect wirelessly.  In the available network's list, it said they security settings did not match the required system security settings.  Can someone tell me where I can find the required settings?  I am able to connect wirelessly if I disable the security.

I had this happen to me once, the first thing I did was unplug the wireless router for about 10-15 seconds, I shut off my laptop, then I plugged the router back in and then rebooted the laptop and it connected.

I am not sure if this will help, but you can try that first.

It was my E1705, purchased in April 07, with the same wireless card and my router is the WRT54G, so maybe, just maybe you'll get lucky.

Also try WPA2 PERSONAL, that might connect.

with out your pass phrase what are the security settings on

1. the router.

2. the adapter in your computer

these must match ie wpa on one wpa on the other

I am assuming you are using wpa-psk not entrprise....

Also i find it most useful to use the cut and paste when transfering the passphrase between router and adapter.

XP or Vista?

Also, as it's a wrt54g ... you should check out www.dd-wrt.com at some point (once you get things working and want to expand what your router can do)

Davet50 - I am not sure what the security settings are on the adapter card.  Do you know how I can find that?  I think that's the root of my problem.  If I can find what the card is I can set the router to match.

P.S.  I have Vista OS.

should be a listing in your programs file for the adapter. click on it and it should launch the adapter setup program.

I finally figured it out.  I went to Manage Networks and right clicked, properties on my wireless connection.  Then clicked the security tab.  This is where I needed to put the security information for the router.  This was not set up.  I went back into the router and set security, then set it up here and it's working perfectly!  Thanks, everyone, for helping me think.
