Wireless security setting
My DSL wireless is an ActionTec Gateway. I set it for 64-bit WEP which requires 4 sets of HEX values, each set containing 5 pairs of HEX ex:(38 A5 D3 13 55)
I'm trying to setup a laptop with an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945. When setting up this Intel PRO for 64-bit WEP, it's asking for
Wireless Security Password (encryption key) in this format: (Pass phrase - 5 characters or HEX - 10 Hexadecimal values.) SAY WHAT???? I have no idea where this pass phrase value would be coming from. I don't set it up in the ActionTec.
My older laptop had a Netgear wireless where I set the WEP Key HEX values the same as in the ActionTec. I can't find anywhere in the Intel PRO to enter the the WEP Key.
Sure can use some help on this issue,
Thanks

I have a friend who has the same dsl modem with wi-fi and I will find out for sure. but I think that what you are saying is that it asks you for a passphrase and you can generate keys off it or input your own WEP keys? so example: "my name is bob" - (click generate button)

When you try to connect to your modem, enter that key in. I believe twice. And what wireless software are you using? Intels or windows?

In the modem I set up 4 keys, each with 5 pairs hex values. There is nowhere in the Intel, that I can find, where I can enter the same 4 key values. I don't understand what I have to put in the intel passphrase, the 4 key values as in the modem sure don't fit.
I'm using Intel software.

with the hex passphase keys set in your router.. just enter the same keys into the wireless setup with the intel pro.. and then select 1 key to be active since the other 3 are for backup and easy switching between keys
i would still change to a wpa encryption however

Also try using Windows XP Wireless, unfortunatly I do not have my notebook with me and I can only give rough instructions on how to use it.
Open up control panel (Start > control panel), navigate to network connections, and then open up the wireless connection. look around for: "Use windows to connect to wireless" or something like that. Or I believe you can right-click on the wi-fi connection, select "View availible wireless networks" When that comes up, click advanced because it might say that you use different software. In advanced, look around tabs and stuff for the use windows. This will use Windows XP network instead of Intel. Try it out, if it doesnt work, its not hard to switch back. Just uncheck and open Intel's.

or were you configuring it as 128-bit and putting the 64-bit key in?
WPA is just as simple, You just generate the key, and type that really long key into where you put the password and connect! pretty simple. Intel should remember it so you can connect automatically too. Glad it worked tho!

I was trying to configure it for 64-bit and putting all 4 keys in and they would not fit. No where have I read where 3 of the 4 keys were backup.
Amazing how great things work when you know what you are doing.
Thanks,,,

Thank you all for the help you've given me. Last night I configured for 128 bit WEP which required only 1 Key and that worked fine. What I learned from you all is that out of the 4 Keys I was using for 64-bit in the modem, only one would have been required as the other 3 are backup. That I am sure would have worked.
I'm running OK now with the 128-bit WEP but after giving my brain a rest I think I will look into setting up for WPA.
Thanks for the help. You might see me again on this forum when I try for the WPA.
