Wireless signal not consistant

I have a Dell laptop Inspiron 1501 wireless N AMD Tk-53 1.7 GHZ 2 GB RAM with Vista Home premium.  Sometimes when I start up the wireless signal seems healthy enough around 130 Mbps, but it doesn't take long before it degrades from 130 Mbps to 65-54-39-19-11-5.5 then settling in around 2 Mbps.  I am using a D-Link DIR-625 router and have it set to broadcast across the spectrum.  My girlfriend has a Toshiba with a wireless G card which I might add seems to be very consistant at 54 Mbps.  I have another desktop with a D-Link adapter and it stays at 300 Mbps.  Why doesn't my Dell wireless N card work and play well with others?

I am have the exact same problem.  Have you solve this problem?  If so I would be very interested in hearing from you.

First I tried to read through all the FAQs and educate myself about wireless.  To tell you the truth, the more I read, the less I feel like I know and my understanding is still pretty basic although I think I grasp at least the basic concepts when setting up a wireless network.

I went through and tried little changes with the wireless adapter, changing only one thing at a time and even recongiruing my router, a D-Link 625 to broadcast only in "N" mode, but all of this didn't seem to make much of any difference.

Finally Dell relented and sent me a new mini-card and installed that and now it seems to be doing better on average, but the speeds aren't nearly what I expect them to be.  Generally around 54 to 68, sometimes a little better.  I purchased a D-Link wireless adapter express card and it gets a constant 300 Mbps.

The replacement wireless card I understand is a little newer and maybe communicates a little better than the old card, I don't know?

pogoboy:

What wireless encryption are you using? Can you try connecting at WPA2 and see if there is a change in connection speed?

I am on WPA2.  I've tried various security settings and not seen any improvement whatsoever.  In short, I finally decided to disable the Dell wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card that came with my Inspiron 1501 after several attempts with Dell Gold Support to improve or repair the problem and now I am using a D-link DWA-643 and seeing vast improvement with both speed and consistancy of the wireless signal through my personal home network.  I've gone from seeing signals on the Dell wireless adapter at 5.5 to 19 Mbps to the D-link wireless adapter at 160 to 300 Mbps!

Maybe someone can explain to me why there is such a stark contrast between these two wireless adapters in speed and performace?

I think the Broadcom chipset in he Dell 1505 card is of poor quality.  Dell does not seem to know how to fix this problem, aside from swapping cards.  I am going to try to have Dell let me exchange the 1505 card for the Intel Chipset card.  Maybe that will make the difference.

if you had not allready gotten a D-link card that would have been my first recommendation. Since the "N" spec has not been fully approved there are a lot of inconsistencies with equipment especially between different mfrs..

Generally speaking in order to obtain the best performance all the equipment should be from the same mfr and use the same type of chipsets...

Some stuff will play together well and others will not.. Linksys and D-link are known for this. Untill the final N spec is ratified the N equipment will still have these issues...
