Wireless Speed Stuck at 1.0!

I have an Inspiron 6400/E1505 laptop and have been experiencing the same problem using my wireless router lately.  I have a linksys WRT54G wireless router. I have upgraded firmware and have also updated software on my Dell Wireless 1390 LAN mini card as well.  Despite everything, every time I try to connect using my wireless, the connection starts at 54 mbps and gradually works its way down to 1.0.  Then it gets stuck and never goes back up unless I repair the connection, only to have it happen again.  The strange thing is, when I'm at my parents house and use their router settings, I have no problem getting between 54 and 48 mbps.  Stranger still, I also have an IBM Thinkpad that runs on the same router with no problem holding a consistent speed of 54 mbps.  I have a secure network as well.  I'm at my wits end and I'm a little irritated that I cannot get help from the call center b/c my warranty just ran out.  If anyone could provide more steps to take I'd greatly appreciate it.  The computer works fine with the Local Area Network cable as well.  It's just when I use the Linksys router that it does this.
Thanks in advance.  Also let me know if you need any additional info to help.

The old one worked worse that's why I did all of the upgrades.  Anymore suggestions?
Thanks!

Hi,

You seem to have tried most of the steps to get to the exact fix. Below are few steps you could try to see it would turn out to be a work around.

1) Have you tried changing channels on the router - 1,6 or 11?
2) Modify a few wireless card settings like - Rate (Set it to 54Mbps), BSS Mode (G-Only), PLCP Header (Long), Minimum Power Consumption (Disabled). To modify these settings, get into device manager -- Right Click on the Dell Wireless 1390 Card under Network Adapters -- Properties -- Advanced Tab. Use the link here for more details on these settings.

3) Go into Control Panel -- Network Connections -- Check for availability of an icon that says "Network Bridge". If found delete the same.

not sure how the dell,s setup program is, but there is a couple other things you might try...set your bios to default...or optimal settings..that got a hard drive working once for me

Thanks Best-try.  I did alter some of the settings you suggested.  We'll see if that does the trick or not.  The only one I couldn't modify was the BSS G-Only setting.  The only other option is 802.11.  So I left the default setting.
Thanks again!

This is not a hardrive issue, but thanks

what would the optimal settings in the card properties be?

-the setup settings has to do with cmos settings, it possible it has some effect on lan settings too...

-what is the distance from the wiFi point, need to put it within a couple of meters

-is there a 2.4 ghz phone nearby,,if so, go into the router and change frequency

-scan to check that nobody eles is using the same or adjacent wireless channel

-might try moving the router to a different locations

-try restarting you modem, and router if using both

-try different channel, could be someone eles is using the same channel

-are you sure its not your isp provider

-if possible, try a different adapter and router to rule out hardware problem

-try intels drivers for your 1390 adapter

- if you have a switch between wall and modem,,make sure its working okay

-make sure your rj-45 cables have been tested and working properly

If you are using encryption, do you still have the problem when you are not using encryption??

-in setup on the router, if mtu is set on auto, change it to 1485 ,,and see if that helps.
