wireless switch

Morning all I have a inspiron 1300 laptop. When I refresh network list on Wireless connections tab. It says "make sure wireless switch on your computer is on" How do I find out if the wireless switch is on?? Any ideas. My laptop has worked for ages using a netgear wirelss router but now it has dropped the connection.
