Won't Connect To My Network

"I am trying to wireless connect my new Inspiron 1705 notebook through a router to my hardwired Dell Dimension desktop.  I've used the wireless network and network wizards (a thousand times!).  I can get internet on both computers and,  I can access shared-documents on the Inspiron from the Dimension, but I cannot access the Dimension from my Inspiron.  I've changed routers, anti-virus programs and even tried using a USB wireless adapter on the notebook (still get internet but no access to the Dimension).  In all cases, I'm told (on the Inspiron) that my network is not available (even though it gives the name for my network) and that I "might lack permission" to use it -- check with my administrator, which is me.  I've turned off firewalls, changed the name of the network, even hooked up the Dimension with a wireless adapter tos ee if the issue was the hardwire (Dimension worked fine wirelessly).  In no case can I get the Inspiron to let me network with the Dimension.

Any thoughts?

I went into the Network controls and turned off firewalls for wireless network, but still no access permitted to the network.

Both have XP operating systems.

Depending on the brand name of the firewall software, simply disabling or deleting the program does not necessarily fix the problem. It's better to configure the firewall(s) to allow for network sharing and internet access.

Followed your directions (not sure whether to use manual or automatic and chose automatic) for the two remote access and the RPC.  Restarted.  No avail -- the laptop still shows up on the desktop, but the laptop will not let me into the network.

I appreciate the suggestion.

I'll guarantee you it is a firewall issue.

I am having a simular problem with a machine XP home. I can access the internet and print to the network printer but unable to connect to any of the other 3 computers on the network. The other computers can access this one though. Can't wait to hear how this turns out and get my problem solved also I hope.

Well Sir you were correct. Unbeknowest to me the new computers had McAfee firewall enabled and had not been set to allow LAN traffic. Thanks for the proding of the brain in that direction. I had only worked on the Microsoft firewall side. My problem is solved.

Don't feel bad, this issue comes up a few times everyday here with those hidden settings.  Now, decide on which one to use and turn the other one off.  Personally, I prefer the Windows firewall and use a good SPyware detection protection and use two of them.
