Workgroup Logon

I have established an internect connection using my 1184 TrueMobile router, an ethernet LAN connection on my Dell Dimension Destop/Office computer and my Dell Inspiron/8200 Notebook computer using a wireless connection.  While both compters readily connect to the internet I am unable to logon to the WORKGROUP I setup for both of these computers. I have given each a unique name and have assigned the workgroup name "GREEN" to each computer. When I attempt to logon to the network I get the message "Green is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource." I am logged on each computer with Administrator status but under differenet log on names (and XP won't allow me to change the name).

Any suggestions as to what I can do to get this network configured so that I can share the printer that is connected to my Desktop/Office computer and also share files on each computer. The network wizard did report that I might not have used the correct names but I have changed them two or three times with the same results. Any help appreciated.

do you have firewall on? Turn it off.  can you ping the other pc? Get the IP  of the other computer (usually 192.168.X.X) and then from your laptop open the command prompt and type ping and hit  enter If you get a reply then you should be golden, if not then either firewall is blocking it or something else. Remember Windows XP has a built in firewall so if you didn't install one XP might still be blocking it.

Also if you  have a computer from work then it maybe a prob to change stuff as administrators usually limit features but give you full access to systems. They don't want you messing with network settings. If this is your PC however then you should be able to just click the icon beside your name on the start menu (at the top) and then click HOME and then change away some settings.

Also  ping your laptop from your desktop too using the  same command but with the IP of the laptop (obviously)

Thanks, but not getting logged on to Workgroup yet. I did check that the Firewall is off on both computers. I also used the ping command on both computers to verify that I can ping the host name, default gateway and the respective computers IP address. They are 192.168.2.2 and 192.168.2.3 and the default gateway is 192.168.2.1. This is as expected.  However, I can't ping from one computer to the other. I get the time out error message. Also using the Command Prompt: Netview "computername" I was able to verify the devices and folders setup for sharing on each computer.

Apparantly this is a network workgroup issue and has to do with how I access each computer and then the network. I have named the notebook computer "Inspiron" and named the desktop computer "Dimension" and assigned the workgroup name "Green". Checking system on each computer verifies this setup.

I logon Windows XP in one computer as "Lee Green" and on the other computer as "Main". Both have administrator status. Could this be the source of the problem? I can't change either name as XP won't allow it.

I have a similar problem. Turning off Norton security on one machine and putting the IP address in the trusted zone of zone alarm helped. I set up fixed IP addresses. My XP wants a user name and password to contact my windows 2000 on Dimension, but I didn't use a password. Tried user Administrator which does didn't help either. So something on the Dimension  is blocking communication I think. I am using Linksys wireless for the network.
