To use WPA you must have the Windows update for it, be using Windows to handle the wireless connection and check the WPA box, and have a Linksys driver for the WPC54G that supports WPA.
I did all the first part. Perhaps it was the driver. When I get time, I may look for that. It shows a texas Inst PCMCIA right now. They have what looks like a beta for it on the Linksys site.

I use a WPC54G in a C600 with WPA and DHCP. But I do use a Linksys WRT54G router also. MS just (10/31/03) posted a update to the WPA XP patch.
