tmoconnell,

Windows XP has a native driver for the MDP3900 modem.  If you did an "upgrade" from Windows ME or Windows 2000, the modem driver needed to be uninstalled first.  Remove the modem, uninstall the modem driver from Device Manager, uninstall the "Unimodem Half Duplex Wave Device" from the Sound, Video and Game Controllers category in Device Manager.  Restart the computer to be sure that it does not try to detect the modem (you removed it earlier).  Shut down, reinstall the modem and let Windows XP find a driver for it on the Windows XP CD.  It should show up as a Dell Data / Fax / Voice Modem.

Thanks Steve.

I've been reading the previous posts and nothing was this sharp or detailed.

I hope that it gets you working again.

Steve:

That didn't work, though it was easy to try.  When the machine was started, the modem was not in the device manager under system tools.

Also, there wasn't a unimodem half duplex wave device in the SVG Controllers category.

I booted the machine and the modem was added as a Dell Fax Data Modem after physical install, but XP didn't signal on the toolbar that a new device was found.

Here's what's therein the SVG category:

Audio Codecs
Creative AudioPCI (es1371,es1373)(wdm)
Game Port for Creative
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Cature Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

I ran a modem test with software left over from the W98 install.  The modem appears at port 3.  It appears that the modem tested OK.  The modem is not in the registry and no dial tone was recognized.  I hear the modem switch on/off when the test is performed.

Any ideas?

If this has already been cleared up in a post, I haven't found it through reading 170 postings for Aztech modem troubleshooting here on the forum.

tmoconnell,

If the modem tested OK, it should work.  COM3 is the correct COM port for this modem under Windows XP.  It is a virtual COM port.  Try to use hyperterminal to dial out with it.

tmoconnell,

There will be a reference to the modem in the registry, probably in several places.  If the modem shows up in Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel and you can query the modem, then it is recognized correctly and is communicating with Windows. The real test is to try and dial out with it.

Doesn't the modem have to be in the registry?

That worked.

Got a dial tone and was able to call out.  The pointed me to my internet setup.  It wasn't updated.

Thanks again.

Now, how do I get XP to recognize my Mini Cruzer?  W98se recognized it.   Any ideas?

moconnell,

Your mini cruzer USB flash drive should be recognized by Windows XP as a mass storage device or as a removeable drive.

Steve:

XP recognizes the device, but in the device manager it is posted individually with ayellow box and a question mark.  Going to properties, it comes up as a USB device.

There is one reference to something similar on another thread.  That recommends deleting the root hub driver to let XP install.

Could it be USB 1.0 vs. US 2.0?

tmoconnell,

Deleting the USB ports and root hub may resolve the issue.  Be sure that no USB devices are connected when you do this.  USB 1.0/1.1 devices operate in USB 2.0 ports and vice versa.  The primary difference is data transfer rate.  The data transfer rate will be at the slower of either the port or of the attached device.

Incidentally, since this is a new topic, you should start a new thread.
