XP Internet Connection

I am having severe trouble accessing any webpages at all.  Every time I try, the page progress hangs for a while and then eventually gives the message "website not responding (error 502)".

Every time I try to access a webpage the above message appears after some time.....the page is then linked to an inappropriate URL prefix followed by the web address i am trying to access.  This happens every time i try through aol and also through internet explorer independently.

I HAVE NEVER ACCESSED THIS PARTICULAR WEBPAGE NOR SEEN IT IN MY LIFE....what is going on?.....

I have undertaken extensive throubleshooting with AOL such as deleting the network adapter, clearing browser cache, restoring all the browser defaults, re-installing AOL, downloading latest version of iexplorer and running adaware, spybot search & destroy and norton antivirus.  I have also un-installed kazaa as it was suggested this may be the source of the problem.  It was thus resolved that the problem is not a fault with AOL but with the PC and i was advised to contact dell which I have done.  Im just desperare to resolve the issue and would welcome any suggestions whatsoever.  I have also tried installing mcafee firewall but that doesnt work.

Thank you for the above information however I find it all very foreign to me.  I must make it clear that although I posted in the network section, this was the only category i found to contain any info on internet connection.  I am not on a network.

Thus, does your information still apply? If so, please provide further instruction on how to carry out these checks.

Thanks again :o)

Lets do some basic IP (Internet Protocol) Network checks first............which is the underlying network protocol for Web browsing.

(1) Is your computer set for dynamic IP address allocation - DHCP or static IP...check via the network connection and TCP/IP properties tab.....should be DHCP ideally

(2) Does your computer get allocated an IP address ok ? - check by Start - Run -  ipconfig/all (win2k/XP)... ......this is a part of windows "Windows IP Configuration" and will tell you if its communicating okay with the router. You should have the IP address, Subnet mask and default gateway fields all populated.

(3) Assuming all the above are okay can you ping the router "Start - Run - command"....this will open a DOS shell window for your - white on black.......just issue the command "ping ip_address" where Ip_address is the default-gateway (router) IP address - dotted decimal series of numbers. You should get a " Reply in X ms" if all is well

(4) Post the results to help the diagnosis be completed.then try a "tracert www.dell.com" to see if basic Ip connectivity and DNS (Domain Name Server) are working correctly from the DOS window.

I'm having the same problem with road runner.  Have you been able to figure out how to get it to work?

Thanks!

BP,

Actually you do have a network - its just point to point between your network NIC card and your cable modem or router

This even applies for dial up connections too...........essentially the IP stack of your PC needs how to move packets onto the Internet and uses the Network layer to do this

So yes you need to do these troubleshooting...keywords highlighted in RED below  steps for us to aid you
